Pixmantec says it will no longer support RawShooter Premium and offers existing users free upgrade to Adobe Lightroom 1.0 (free version???). Well, since Adobe Lightroom is still in beta stages, we still do not know how much is Adobe Lightroom is going to be priced yet. And this also means the end-of-life for RawShooter Premium has started and no more support for it. Here is the letter to the existing RawShootoer Premium users:
Dear RawShooter!

In the press release, Adobe has announced that it will acquire the technology assets of Pixmantec. Pixmantec is a well-known maker of digital imaging software specializes in advanced workflow of using camera raw files. Pixmantec's product lines are RawShooter Premium (commercial ware) and RawShooter Essentials (freeware). I have tried RawShooter Essentials during the early stage of release and I find it to be on par with the well-known Phase One's C1Pro software. And the good thing is that it is free ... and even if you have to pay a small amount of money, it is still worth it in my opinion. Well, Adobe move to acquire Pixmantec may be a good news to those using Adobe Photoshop CS2 for raw file conversion as you will be getting a much better raw software to cater for your regular photo post-processing workflow. But this is definitely not going to be a good news for those relying on the free RawShooter Essential software because this acquistion may means the end of RawShooter Essential. Anyway, here is the extract of the press release from Adobe: Adobe Further Extends Leadership in Digital Photography Raw File WorkflowsAdobe Acquires Technology Assets of Pixmantec ApSLONDON — June 26, 2006 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced it has acquired the technology assets of Pixmantec ApS, makers of digital imaging software that provides advanced workflow management and processing capabilities for digital camera raw files. The acquisition strengthens Adobe's leadership position in raw processing. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. "With high quality digital cameras now within reach of every photographer, customers are gravitating to raw file formats that allow them to get more control over final results," said John Loiacono, senior vice president of Creative Solutions at Adobe®. "By combining Pixmantec's raw processing technology and expertise with our own, we're continuing to deliver on the promise that even your existing raw files can be processed with increasing quality as our software technology evolves." Pixmantec is a privately held company headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark and currently ships the RawShooter® line of digital photography software products. Adobe plans to integrate Pixmantec raw processing technologies into Lightroom™ and wherever customers will be working with raw files. In preparation for this integration, the Pixmantec RawShooter Premium product is being discontinued, though the free RawShooter Essentials product will continue to be available until the Lightroom public beta program is completed. Existing Pixmantec customers will continue to be supported by Adobe and will be provided with an upgrade path to the Adobe digital imaging product family. Adobe believes this acquisition will not have a material financial impact on the company.

Monday, 29 May 2006 07:45 GMT Microsoft has announced a new still image format called Windows Media Photo (with a WDP file extension). According to their white paper this new format offers compression ratios close to JPEG-2000 but with the computational requirements of JPEG (smaller files with the same image quality). The use of new algorithms are also claimed to reduce the visibility of 'objectionable spatial artifacts' (those mosquito JPEG artifacts). Windows Media Photo supports a wide range of image formats including both fixed and floating point numerical representations (think wide dynamic range), various color spaces, metadata (including EXIF) and even transparency. This new format will be supported in Windows Vista when it arrives and will be made available for Windows XP, there has been no word yet of support for the format in any hardware devices.
